Locating a Source Under Time Pressure
An urgent attendance compresses a survey rather than replacing it. The instruments are the same, the order is the same, and what changes is that the engineer is working towards a decision about where to open rather than towards a written report.
The eliminations that come first
Two tests take minutes and remove most of the possibilities. The first is a meter test: close every outlet in the property, take a reading, wait a stated interval and read it again. Movement means the incoming cold supply is losing water somewhere between the meter and the last fitting. A static meter with a wet ceiling points at the heating, the waste, the property above or the building fabric instead. The second is the boiler gauge, read cold and then read cold again. A sealed heating circuit that holds its pressure is not the source, whatever the room it is in looks like.
From there the engineer divides the system. Drying is not a same day process
Stopping the water and extracting what is standing takes hours. Drying a wetted floor build-up, a screed or a party wall takes weeks, and it is measured rather than guessed. Making good follows drying, not repair

The reinstatement date is set by moisture readings, not by the repair date, which is why the repair invoice and the making good invoice are rarely the same week.
Access nobody can force
If the source is in the flat above, the communal riser or a neighbouring demise, the constraint is not technical. Nobody can enter without the occupier, the managing agent or the freeholder, and no amount of urgency changes that. What to Do Before the Van Arrives
This is the part of the day you control, and it changes the outcome more than the arrival time does.

- Switch off electricity to affected circuits at the consumer unit if you can do so safely from a dry position, and stay away from anything wet and live.
- Photograph and video the damage, the water and affected contents before you start clearing up.
- Move furniture and electricals clear, lift rugs, and get containers under active drips.
- Write down when you first noticed the symptom, not when it became obvious, and any history of boiler top-ups or damp patches.

A ceiling holding water is a load nobody should stand under. The safe response is to keep people out of the room rather than to pierce it, unless a professional has judged otherwise on site.
